Benjamin Underwood

January 26, 1992 - January 19, 2009

"As God's creation we need to learn to love and encourage one another - not discourage a person who doesn't look like you, walk, talk, nor see like you. No one deserves to be categorized and put in a disability box. Because I am blind I don't see the appearance of a person - I see beyond that."

                                             - Ben Underwood, excerpt from Thank God i,                                                     https://thankgodi.com/story/thank-god-im-blind/

Ben Underwood was an extraordinary young man who overcame the loss of his eyesight to inspire people around the world. Born in 1992, Ben was diagnosed with retinoblastoma at the age of two and had both eyes removed by the age of three. Despite this, Ben developed the remarkable ability of human echolocation, using clicking sounds with his tongue to navigate his surroundings.

Ben's incredible story gained attention through appearances on CBS, ABC, Oprah and others, where he demonstrated his ability to ride a bike, play video games, and live a full life without sight. His unique vision extended beyond physical sight, as he judged people by their actions and words, leaving a lasting impact on those who met him.

Ben's vision was not limited by his blindness, he saw limitless potential in himself and others. He believed in the power of the human spirit to overcome obstacles and achieve greatness. Ben's story is a testament to the idea that true vision comes from within. His determination, optimism, and ability to live life fully despite his challenges have inspired countless people to look beyond their limitations and embrace their inner strength.

Ben passed away in 2009, just before his 17th birthday, but his legacy continues through documentaries, viral videos, and his mother's book, "Echoes of an Angel". Ben Underwood's life is a powerful testament to resilience and the limitless potential within each of us. His story encourages us all to see beyond our physical limitations and to inspire, motivate, and change the lives of as many people as possible.

"Ben Underwood's ability to navigate the world using echolocation is nothing short of extraordinary. His skill and determination demonstrate the incredible adaptability of the human brain."

                                                                             - Dr. Daniel Kish, founder of World Access for the Blind

"Ben Underwood's story is a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of the human spirit. His use of echolocation to 'see' his environment is a remarkable example of how the brain can compensate for sensory loss."

-Dr. Oliver Sacks, renowned neurologist and author
